Mă izbește că stau de vorbă cu cel mai bun mijlocaș defensiv din istoria fotbalului modern abia după câteva minute de interviu.

Îmi amintesc anii galacticilor din Madrid.

Claude Makélélé îmi vorbește și eu am flash-uri cu spectacolul pe care-l făcea echipa. Golul lui Zidane din finala UCL cu Leverkusen. Aproape că-l văd în slow motion în timp ce doar reportofonul a rămas să-l asculte pe Claude.

Un jucător exemplar, măturător francez de dribling-uri, pilonul care a ținut Real Madrid 3 sezoane în spate, apoi și-a așezat tronul la Londra și a rezistat 5 ani, timp în care Chelsea a înregistrat un record de 86 de meciuri fără înfrângere pe teren propriu.

T: My first question is gonna be difficult.

CM: *laughs* Tell me, tell me.

T: Your very first memory with football, when you were a kid. What was it?

CM: First memory? I was crazy. I was 9 y old and I was always going to school taking my ball with me. All my friends hated me. Everyday, when school finished I went to play football. Oh, you go and play football all the time, they said, even alone you go! Now, one of my friends said some time ago, fucking hell, I remember when you were younger how you were, what you became and why you love this job.

I think that when you are young you have to love this job, playing football.

T: Your father played football, you got this passion from him.

CM: Yes. When I started, my father already knew the sacrifice you need to do to play football. When you are a father you don’t want your children to sacrifice, you know? But some say: you never know, maybe he will grow a stronger footballer, let him play. My father saw me. Younger, I was very quiet, coming back home from football, cleaning my shoes, making everything serious, harder, you know, he said: OK. You want this job? OK. Do it.

Știți cum, la gimnastică, sunt tot felul de procedee care iau numele sportivilor care le-au executat pentru prima dată? Tzukahara, Danilovă, Urzică. Eh, în fotbal nu se întâmplă des. Și când spun nu des, spun că, până acum, în fotbal s-a întâmplat o singură dată referitor la un post din teren. The Makélélé Role este considerat mijlocașul defensiv absolut.

T: So when was the first time you realized you could make a career out of this?

CM: You know that time around 14 y old when you get to see and play around the big teams? My small team (youth) started playing in competitions against other teams that had professional levels, not just kids. It just opened my eyes.

When you see hundreds and hundreds of people playing or watching, wearing the same T-shirt, same shoes, I was like: Wow, this is amazing, I want to be there.

This was what started making me thinking, when I was 13-14 y old, that I want to be professional. I wanted to be that guy, it was beautiful. Now, when I played, It didn’t care how many people are watching, I stayed focused.

T: I’m a Real Madrid fan, always have been. Feel in love with the team when Los Galacticos were high and you played there and won Champions League. Do you remember your first day at Real, when you saw the pitch and met the guys? How was it?

CM: You know the problem with Madrid? You know straight away that they want you to win trophies and make examples. This white t-shirt is so… so hard. In your mind you know. It’s kinda they give you a document about how things go at the club. Straight away you know you want to win something with this team. I don’t know why, but it’s in their blood. They give you this t-shirt, the give you this responsability that makes you die for this t-shirt.

First time there I was like fucking hell!. Entering the stadium I was like oh my god. Your body starts shaking, you know?

I think that after you play for Real Madrid, you can play in any country. The pressure anywhere else is nothing compared. Madrid is unbelievable.

When I met the team I thought everyone was so strong. Facing and winning big teams in Spain, Italy, England. Now, the team is 12-13 players deep. Back then we were 15-18 top players. Big competition.

T: Playing against Real Madrid brings fear in other teams, more respect.

CM: Exactly! I remember playing against Milan. Maldini and the others. It started in the tunnel. I walked up and saw the other team in the tunnel. Everyone was so serious and concentrated, while the players from Real were relaxed, chating, saying hello. When you see that you know already you are going to win the match.

Now I don’t know how it is. Back then, when you saw players like Zidane coming in, Ronaldo, Raul, Morientes, McManaman, Roberto Carlos, then you saw the bench and it was the same thing, didn t matter which player was in or out, the team play didn’t drop, it was all leadership. Every player was huge. Ballon D’Or, deep games, big characters, strong mentality.

I remember losing 2-0 one time, Del Bosque in the dressing room going crazy, shouting at everyone. Now, I don’t see anyone taking that responsability.

T: My blog is visited by a lot of parents which have kids playing football. What should a parent know in order to make his kid a better person?

CM: The problem I see in a lot of countries about the parents. Now, parents want to put the kids into football to change their lives and make money.

No, it’s not like that. You have to tell your children to enjoy and that you’ll always be happy with him and never get angry. This makes the difference. When you get all serious.. nah, let children be children, not adults. I think it’s the key. Your relationship will change in time, you’ll see the way the child will love this sport. This sport is genius.

T: Prima întrebare va fi cea mai grea.

CM: *râde* Spune-mi, spune-mi.

T: Care este prima ta amintire legată de fotbal, de pe vremea copilăriei?

CM: Prima amintire? Eram nebun. Aveam 9 ani și mereu mergeam la școală cu mingea la mine. Toți prietenii mei aveau ciudă. În fiecare zi, când terminam școala, mergeam să joc fotbal. Joci fotbal tot timpul, spuneau, chiar și singur te joci! Acum ceva vreme, unul dintre ei mi-a spus: Frate, îmi amintesc când erai mai tânăr ce făceai, ce ai devenit acum și de ce iubești să faci asta.

T: Tatăl tău a jucat fotbal, ai pasiunea asta de la el.

CM: Da. Când am început, tata știa deja ce sacrificiu trebuie făcut ca să joci fotbal. Când ești tată nu vrei să-i vezi pe copiii tăi cum se sacrifică, știi? S-a gândit să mă lase, sperând să ajung un fotbalist puternic. M-a văzut. De mic eram foarte tăcut. Veneam acasă de la fotbal, îmi spălam mereu ghetele, luam toată treaba în serios, știi? Apoi a zis ok, dacă vrei să faci asta pe viitor, fă-o.

T: Când a fost primul moment în care ai realizat că poți face carieră din asta?

CM: Știi și tu că pe la 14 ani începi să te intersectezi cu seniorii. Echipa mea de juniori juca în competiții contra altor cluburi care aveau și seniori, nu doar copii. Atunci mi s-au deschis ochii.

Când vezi sute și sute de oameni care joacă sau se uită, care poartă același tricou, același ghete, e ceva… atunci am zis: Aici vreau să fiu.

Asta m-a făcut să mă gândesc serios la fotbal, pe la 13-14 ani mi-am dat seama că vreau să fiu profesionist. Voiam să ajung departe, era un vis frumos. Jucând am învățat că nu contează ce-i în jur sau câți oameni se uită la mine, rămân mereu concentrat.

T: Personal, sunt fan Real Madrid dintotdeauna. M-am îndrăgostit de echipă când Galacticii erau pe val, tu jucai acolo și ați câștigat UCL. Îți mai amintești prima ta zi la Real, când ai văzut terenul și i-ai cunoscut pe jucători? Cum a fost?

CM: Știi care e treaba cu Madrid? Știi din start că ei vor trofee și că vor să stabilească standardele. Tricoul acela alb e foarte greu și te gândești la asta tot timpul. E ca și cum ți-ar da o foaie pe care scrie ce trebuie făcut neapărat. Știi din start că poți să câștigi ceva la echipa asta. Nu pot explica, dar cred că e în sângele lor. Îți dau tricoul și odată cu el responsabilitatea care te face să-ți dai viața pentru a-l purta.

Prima dată acolo a fost nebunie. Când am pășit pe gazon am zis Dumnezeule!. Începea corpul să-mi tremure. Cred că, după ce joci pentru Real Madrid, poți merge să joci oriunde. Presiunea din alte părți e nimic. La Madrid e incredibil.

Băieții erau foarte puternici, să joci mereu cu echipe tari din Spania, Italia, Anglia era ceva. Acum greul e dus de 12-13 jucători. Pe atunci eram 15-18 titulari. Concurență foarte mare.

T: Adversarii sunt mereu intimidați de Real Madrid, arată mai mult respect.

CM: Exact. Îmi amintesc un meci la Milan. Jucau Maldini și ceilalți. Din tunel a început. Am intrat și i-am văzut pe toți în tunel. Erau crispați și încordați, în timp ce noi încercam să intrăm în discuții, să-i salutăm. Se simțea din start că o să câștigăm meciul.

Acum nu știu cum e. Pe atunci îi vedeai pe teren pe Zidane, Ronaldo, Raul, Morientes, McManaman, Roberto Carlos, apoi vedeai rezervele care nu erau cu nimic mai prejos, indiferent cine era în teren, echipa juca bine. Jucători uriași, Baloane de Aur, jocuri de calitate, caractere, mentalități puternice.

Îmi amintesc un meci pe care l-am pierdut cu 2-0. A intrat Del Bosque în vestiar și a început să urle la toată lumea. Acum nu văd pe nimeni să-și asume responsabilitatea asta.

T: Blogul meu este citit de părinți cu copii pasionați de fotbal. Ce ar trebui să știe un parinte în așa fel încât copilul său să evolueze?

CM: Problema legată de părinți pe care o văd în multe țări. Acum, părinții vor să-și dea copiii la fotbal ca să le schimbe viața, să-i îmbogățească.

Nu, nu așa se face. Trebuie să le spui copiilor tăi să se bucure de fotbal și că întotdeauna vei fi fericit, să nu te enervezi niciodată pe el. Asta face diferența. Când devii serios… neah, lasă copiii să fie copii. Asta cred că e cheia. Relația cu copilul tău o să evolueze în timp odată ce vezi cât de mult el/ea iubește acest sport. Fotbalul e genial.
